Health : how to use essential oils in everyday life?
What use essential oils? Essential oils are often used in aromatherapy – a form of alternative medicine that uses plant extracts for health and well-being. In this article we are going to give you some tips and ideas regarding the use of essential oils.
But what exactly are essential oils? Essential oils are plant extracts. They capture the scent and flavor of plants, or in other words – their essence. The unique aromatic compounds of the plant give each oil its characteristic essence. Essential oils are obtained by distillation or mechanical methods such as cold pressing.
Once the aromatic chemicals have been extracted, they combine with carrier oil to create a ready-to-use product. The way essential oils are made is important, since essential oils obtained by chemical processes are not considered to be true essential oils.
Essential oils are generally used to make aromatherapy where they are inhaled through various methods. Essential oils are not meant to be swallowed. The chemicals in essential oils can interact with the human body in several ways. When essential oils are applied to the skin, some of the plant's chemicals are absorbed.
Use essential oils in everyday life
However, certain application methods can improve absorption, such as application with heat or to different areas of the body. And yet, scientific studies on the subject are very few. Inhaling aromas of essential oils can stimulate areas of the limbic system, which is a part of the body that plays a role in emotions, behavior, smell and long-term memory.
It is interesting to know that the limbic system is strongly involved in the formation of memories. This may partly explain why familiar smells can trigger memories or emotions. The limbic system also plays a role in controlling several physiological functions such as breathing, heart rate and blood pressure. This is the reason why, some people claim that essential oils can exert a physical effect on the body. For the moment, this has not been confirmed by science.
There are many types of essential oils to choose from
The use of essential oils is really very varied and some of the ways to use them go beyond alternative medicine. In addition, with all the dangers of phthalates found in air fresheners and other chemicals that we use at home, it is good to know that essential oils can also be used as completely natural scents. All you need to do is place orange, lavender or lime essential oil on cotton and stick it on the back of a flower pot or under a chair. Thus the aromas of essential oils will be released into the air and your home will smell very good. Here's what you can still do with essential oils:
Using essential oils to clean the kitchen
Disinfect kitchen worktops
Since many essential oils have antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties, they can very well be used as simple cleaning products at home. On top of that, this use of essential oils will save you a lot of money spent on marketed cleaning products. You can add two to three drops of lime, lavender, thunderstorm or tea tree oil to diluted liquid Castile soap in the bottle. Then you can use this combination to clean countertops in the kitchen or bathroom or for other non-porous surfaces.
You can very well clean your toilet with oils
To clean the toilets
You can use the same essential oils as those for the kitchen and the bathroom to also clean your toilets. You can even make your own toilet tabs by stirring a few drops of these essential oils in a bowl of baking soda, spray lightly with water, and then put the resulting mixture into a form of silicone. Let the mixture dry overnight and store the forms in an airtight jar. Put one of the tabs in the toilet every day before taking your shower and flush the toilet when you get out of the shower to keep your toilet cool between cleanings.
Get into the habit of using oils in your cooking recipes
Change your groceries
Instead of buying a bunch of herbs that won't be good in a week, replace them with essential oils. The rule is to use one drop of essential oil per spoon in your favorite recipes. Essential oils can also be used in dessert recipes. If you like mint chocolate cookies, you can make a homemade version using a drop of mint essential oil. And if you want to lose weight, but don't like the taste of water, you can add a drop of oil in the storm or lime to the water you drink to give it a better taste.
To wash fresh fruits and vegetables
If you just think about how many hands have touched the surface of the fresh fruits and vegetables you buy at your supermarket can give you an idea of how many microbes are on them, not counting the pesticides they were treated with . It is recommended to wash fresh vegetables and fruits with water, avoiding soap and commercial cleaners. But instead, you can very well use essential oils. Add five drops of lemon essential oil to a large bowl of water and wash your vegetables and fruits with it.
To protect your garden
The majority of commercial insect repellents are harmful to children or pets and contain chemicals that are not good for the local ecosystem. So if insects destroy your garden, you can combine 10 drops of essential oil with water and Marseille soap to stop them. Use a spray attachment on the hose and spray the insects with it. If moles and waffles do damage in your garden, there is also a solution using essential oils: you can apply mint essential oil on cotton and place it in their holes. Moles and waffles are allergic to mint and will quickly go away.
Protect yourself from flying insects
One of the disadvantages of summer is flying insects. With so many dangerous chemicals in commercial insect repellents, why not make your own insect repellant that will be cheaper and less harmful to your health? For a more natural alternative, try the following recipe: in a small spray bottle combine 60ml of distilled water, 40ml of vodka and 30 to 40 drops of your favorite essential oil. You can add more or less oil according to your desires. Then use this mixture around your outdoor garden or veranda.
To deter crawling insects
If ants have silted up your house or camping tent, then cinnamon essential oil can help. Cinnamon interacts with ants' nervous systems and prevents them from communicating with other ants, causing them to go away. And the best part is that you won't have to worry about your children or pets being able to ingest toxins. Another great solution is lemongrass. Try to dilute 10 to 20 drops of the substance in 60 to 90 ml of water. Shake and spray the area from which you want to hunt the insects. You will see that with a single spray and the insects will go in another direction.
Reinforce the smell of your washed clothes
If your laundry product doesn't make your clothes smell as fresh as you want, then try using essential oils. What you can do is add essential oils to clothes while washing or while they are drying to give them a fresh, natural smell. It doesn't matter if you use homemade or purchased detergent, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil and wash them as usual. This hypoallergenic alternative will leave your clothes fresher and softer.
To neutralize odors from pets
You should be very careful with using essential oils for your pets, but if the vet gives you permission, then be aware that these oils can work wonders for neutralizing unpleasant odors. You can make an essential oil spray to use in the bedroom, on their bed or even on your hands before massaging your pet. For a calming effect, you can opt for lavender or ylang ylang and for a cheerful effect, try Jasmine or orange. You can combine a drop of lavender with a spoon of natural coconut oil or a drop of tea tree with 240ml of water. The two combinations are perfect for cleaning the bowls in which your animals eat. Avoid lemon essential oil for cleaning bowls, however, since citrus essential oils can damage the liver functions of animals.
To relieve sunburn
You probably already know that applying lemon essential oil to your hair when you're in the sun can create natural blonde strands. But you will be surprised to know that essential oils can also relieve sunburn on the skin. If you've been in the sun too long, combine half a bowl of witch hazel with three tablespoons of pure aloe vera gel and five drops of lavender essential oil in a spray bottle. Shake to mix everything and apply on sunburn if necessary. Aloe vera and lavender are a very calming combination.
To relieve pain
Do you have a headache? Yes, you can take a drug like aspirin or ibuprofen but you also have the choice of treating your headaches naturally with essential oils. Combine almond oil with four drops of mint essential oil, two drops of rosemary, one drop of lavender essential oil, one drop of chamomile essential oil and one drop of essential oil of incense. Shake and apply on the forehead, on the pulse points, on the back and on the spot. Close your eyes and breathe.
Make your own hand sanitizer
If you don't like the alcohol smell of purchased disinfectants, then you can make yourself a natural one that will smell much better using essential oils. Infuse 30ml of aloe vera gel with ten drops of tea tree essential oil and seven drops of lavender essential oil. Combine aloe and essential oils in a glass bottle and use them as a hand sanitizer when you are outside.
To relieve allergies
Seasonal allergies can be very unpleasant. And even if there are plenty of medications that can relieve you, you can also opt for a more natural alternative. For example, you can use an aromatherapy inhaler. Add four drops of cedar wood, four drops of sweet orange and seven drops of eucalyptus to the cotton wick. Then use the inhaler to relieve the sniffling and sneezing.
To clean carpets
Having a clean, fresh carpet can be easier if you make your own cleaner. In reality, if you have soda yeast and essential oils, this becomes entirely possible. Soda yeast is perfect for removing odors from animals or food and essential oils will give a very fresh smell to carpets and the bedroom. Start by vacuuming the carpet and then combine two spoons of baking powder with either ten drops of orange or lemon, five drops of lemongrass and five drops of tea tree, or ten drops of lavender essential oil, five cloves and five drops of cinnamon. Sprinkle the mixture over the entire area of the carpet and use a sponge or dry brush to make it penetrate the carpet. Leave it for at least two hours or more and then vacuum again.
Clean dirt from floors
We've been cleaning our homes with water and vinegar for decades. But let's be honest, no one likes the smell of vinegar. And if you use it on your floors, the smell will spread throughout the room. So instead of vinegar, add five drops of orange and lemon essential oil in a mixture of hot water and a glass of white vinegar inside a bucket. Essential oils will kill the smell of vinegar, while citrus fruits will have antibacterial and antifungal effects.
To relieve muscle aches
There is a good reason behind the fact that all masseurs and therapists use essential oils in their practices. Essential oils have very strong calming effects when applied to the skin. A scientific study has shown that essential oils are beneficial not only for relaxation, sleep and pain relief, but also for reducing symptoms of depression in people with dementia. Try the following recipe to relieve muscle aches: in a small bottle, combine 15ml of grape seed oil and 8 to 10 drops of lavender, mint and eucalyptus essential oils. Shake and massage on painful areas to comfort and relax.
