Why do you often take a little weight during your period?

During menstruation, the body undergoes changes and variations. If abdominal pain, headache or nausea are symptoms that are frequently associated with this period, other less well-known signs may also emerge.

So during menstruation, some women notice that they gain some weight. It would actually be more accurate to talk about weight variation because a return to normal is observed after the menses. What is the origin of this amazing phenomenon? Several factors can explain it:

Water retention

Just before menstruation, estrogen, a natural hormone secreted by the ovary that provides for the formation, maintenance, and functioning of the female genitals and breasts, reaches high levels. A peak that results in water retention!

When estrogen levels go down, progesterone, a hormone that prepares the uterus for pregnancy after ovulation, takes over. It also causes a retention of water!

Digestive disorders

Hormones, and more specifically progesterone, do not just promote water retention: they also act as a relaxant on smooth muscles, which slows down spasms in the digestive tract. A phenomenon that can be the cause of constipation, and therefore a slight weight gain. But some women know the opposite, and tend to have diarrhea during their period.


This is not a secret: because the body undergoes many changes during menstruation, this period tends to tire.

Result? Motivation leaves something to be desired and some women sometimes have difficulty doing physical activity. However "Sweating helps you lose weight in water and endorphin production can help relieve cramps, but there's no shame in taking a day off!", specifies Women's Health Lisa Dabney, assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive science at Mount Sinai Medical School (USA).

Studies have also shown that fatigue promotes the consumption of rich foods, and therefore weight gain.

The increase in appetite

Several studies confirm this: the rules have an impact on the appetite. This is normal, because in this period of hormonal changes, the basic metabolism increases. And again, progesterone to its share of responsibility, since it increases the appetite!

The consequence of these changes? We are more hungry than usual and we turn more easily to rich foods and calories, which, in addition to causing weight gain, also promote water retention.
